Discovering Love, Loss, and Gods in “Divine Rivals”

Published in April 2023, Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross was a book I initially resisted due to my ever-growing TBR pile. Its enchanting UK cover and then, a fortuitous birthday gift, finally propelled me into its embrace. And what an embrace it was! This novel seamlessly blends delicate romance, a fantasy worldbuilding, and profound emotional exploration, resulting in a truly captivating and unforgettable reading experience.

From the tear-jerking prologue, Iris, our protagonist, resonated deeply. Through her journey, we encounter familiar echoes of life’s hidden traumas, the yearning for family, the sting of loneliness, and the agonizing uncertainties of the unknown. Her poignant narrative touched a multitude of emotions, making me highlight passages with fervour (for three chapters post-it notes became necessary!).

Beyond Iris‘s personal odyssey, the novel masterfully weaves in a backdrop of war between the gods. Its impact, not just on warriors but on distant people, resounded deeply, especially given our current world climate.
This thoughtful exploration adds another layer of richness to the narrative.

Furthermore, the dual point-of-view adds invaluable depth. Roman, the male protagonist, serves as a grounding force, his unwavering support creating a safe haven for both Iris and the reader. With his genuineness and youthful impulsiveness, I eagerly anticipate his further development in the sequel.

The supporting cast, too, shines through. Marisol and Attie provide unwavering friendship and understanding, while Keegan, despite her limited appearances, leaves a lasting impression. This chosen family, particularly evident in the latter half, offers a comforting warmth after the storms of the first part.

The fantastical elements are provided thanks to the war between the gods. Ancient myths, reminiscent of Hades and Persephone, blend with enchanting objects, like the magical typewriters bridging kilometres with words. This unique blend creates a captivating world brimming with possibilities.

The ending, though initially puzzling, ultimately leaves you craving the next book. Hints of future plot twists tantalize, promising an even more thrilling ride in the sequel.

As the author aptly states, the right books find you at just the right moments. Divine Rivals was undoubtedly the perfect start to my 2024 and I am so glad to have the sequel ready to be read.

I wonder if you thought of me for even a moment. If you imagined what your departure would do to me… I wonder if you’re lying in an un-marked grave, covered in blood-soaked earth that I will never be able to kneel at, no matter how desperate my soul is to find you. I hate you for leaving me like this.
