An enormous chest rests in the attic of the small house in Trieste. When Andra and Tati free the hooks from the layer of dust and lift the heavy lid, for a moment it’s like going back in time, because their whole life up to today is enclosed in that chest. A box of candies, a few photographs, a tin spoon, a soft wool coat, a dried flower… The objects that gradually emerge tell the story of an entire Jewish family: the true story of the Bucci sisters, which between drama and hope invites us not to forget.

Every year for Holocaust Remembrance Day I promise myself to read a book dedicated to the Holocaust, or in any case to the events that took place during the Second World War, but every time I can’t do it. Although I like the true crime genre, and I am not easily impressed, I always find reads dedicated to this topic too heavy and also the content makes me feel overwhelmed.
This year, on the other hand, I found the audiobook Il baule dei segreti, on Storytel, which is a children’s version of the survival story of the two authors Andra and Tatiana Bucci who were deported at the age of 4 and 6.

In the attic of the house, the two sisters find a chest containing various objects through which it is possible to tell their story. The racial laws, their arrest and deportation to the Auschwitz camp are narrated in a very sweet and tender way. The fate of their cousin Sergio, deceived by the Nazis and used as a laboratory test subject, is told in a delicate way, too. Up to the liberation and stay in an orphanage, which fortunately found an unexpected ending: reunification with their parents and the beginning of a new life.

The paper volume contains illustrations by Elisabetta Stoinich that manage to convey the message of the story: do not forget so that this horror can be prevented from repeating itself again.
A volume definitely recommended for school-aged children.

Nella soffitta della piccola casa di Trieste riposa un enorme baule. Quando Andra e Tati liberano i ganci dallo strato di polvere e sollevano il pesante coperchio, per un attimo è come tornare indietro nel tempo, perché in quel baule è racchiusa tutta la loro vita fino a oggi. Una scatola di caramelle, poche fotografie, un cucchiaio di latta, un cappottino in morbida lana, un fiore essiccato… Gli oggetti che a poco a poco emergono raccontano la storia di un’intera famiglia ebrea: la storia vera delle sorelle Bucci, una storia che tra dramma e speranza ci invita a non dimenticare.

Ogni anno per la giornata della memoria mi riprometto di leggere un libro dedicato alla Shoà, o comunque agli eventi accaduti durante la seconda guerra mondiale, ma ogni volta non riesco a farlo. Nonostante mi piaccia il genere del true crime e non sia facilmente impressionabile, trovo le letture dedicate a quest’argomento sempre troppo pesanti e inoltre la portata del contenuto mi fa sentire sopraffatta.
Quest’anno, invece, ho trovato su Storytel l’audiolibro Il baule dei segreti, che è una versione per ragazzi della storia di sopravvivenza delle due autrici Andra e Tatiana Bucci che furono deportate all’età di 4 e 6 anni.

Nella soffitta di casa, le due sorelle trovano un baule che contiene vari oggetti attraverso i quali è possibile raccontare la loro storia. Si narra così in modo molto dolce e tenero delle leggi raziali, dell’arresto e della deportazione nel campo di Aushwitz. In modo delicato si raccontano le sorti del cugino Sergio, ingannato dai nazisti ed utilizzato come cavia di laboratorio. Fino ad arrivare alla liberazione e al soggiorno in orfanotrofio che fortunatamente ha trovato un finale insperato: il ricongiungimento con i genitori e l’inizio di una nuova vita.

Il volume cartaceo contiene delle illustrazioni di Elisabetta Stoinich che riescono a veicolare il messaggio della storia: non dimenticare affinché si possa impedire a questo orrore di ripetersi ancora.
Un volume sicuramente consigliato ai ragazzi in età scolare.
